Crayfishing with grandmother
Crayfishing with grandmother

Crayfishing with Grandmother, was the first bi-lingual book published with English and Māori on the same page. It was published during the language reassertion in 1975, in the same year as the Treaty of Tribunal was set up. Although it was set in around 1935! Thanks to the National Library of NZ for making it available as an electronic text.
I love the translation that Hapi Potae did because it sounds so "māori/Māori". I can imagine Pā being a little boy on the coast at this time too. I also love the Van Gogh type paintings and colours.
I have started an activity sheet, with an activity for each page of the book, with a focus on one or two aspects of the reo. You might have fun using this, to help develop your childs' reo Māori. Let me know if this is helpful.
